Terrell Powell, (Santa Fe, NM) produces colorful, mixed media pieces, which combine the feel of folk art with a contemporary vibe. Born in Angleton, Texas, his latest body of work reflects the memories and strong ties to rural life Terrell had while growing up. His art showcases simple and vibrant houses, flowers, animals, suns and trees made of a surprising and irreverent combination of colors and patterns.
Powell’s former career as professional illustrator lends itself to the flat, collage appearance of his work. He finds inspiration from folk, naive and outsider art and uses airbrushing to complete his steel sculptures. Not one to follow the rules, Powell strives for the spontaneity and free-spirited quality of children’s and naive art.
His highly collected work appears in galleries, offices, hospitals and fine homes across the country.
Powell’s art Little Red Dog will be featured as the design image for the La Quinta Arts Festival commemorative women’s t-shirt, available for purchase at the Festival Shop.
