Elaine Mathews is an acclaimed artist who has been painting the California Landscape for over fifty years. She strives to capture the ageless beauty of our land and preserve it on canvas for future generations to enjoy.
She grew up in Southern California where she spent her formative years drawing and painting the changing light and shadows cast by the sun on the San Gabriel Mountains. Her love of nature is evident in her paintings. She creates very large, semi-impressionistic landscapes and small plein air paintings, using a palette knife and brush. Elaine is the chapter chairperson of the California Art Club and Plein Air chairperson of The Desert Art Center. She also is a master plein air painting instructor of thirty years.
“I consider myself a traditional artist influenced by the California Impressionists, particularly William Wendt and Benjamin Brown. I hope by viewing my paintings, people will be reminded of times spent experiencing the splendor and ruggedness of the California landscape.”—Elaine Mathews
