Elliott Newton, The Potter of La Quinta, creates wheel-thrown porcelain clay pottery with crystalline glazes.
Coming to his art late in life, Newton connected with his creative side as means of therapy after he had a quadruple heart bypass operation at the age of 55. Newton credits art with literally saving his life and thereafter embraced a mantra of “Not a day without creating art.”
After studying pottery at College of the Desert for five years, Netwon was drawn to the magic created when the kiln reveals the alchemy of the slow fire crystalline glaze process. Using mineral color glazes applied to Asian and early Greek forms expresses Newton’s own creative vision.
Newton’s pottery has received local and regional awards and recognition and he was honored as a Distinguished Artist of La Quinta in 2008. Newton’s functional and decorative pottery can be obtained at art festivals throughout the Southwest, or by contacting his studio.
